Contact Medical: Specialist Concussion Care
San Diego Unified School District has partnered with Contact Medical to provide student-athletes with rapid access to specialist concussion care through secure telemedicine.
Student-athletes with a suspected concussion can typically be evaluated by one of Contact Medical’s board-certified concussion neurologists within 48 hours, including evenings and weekends. Contact Medical provides individualized concussion evaluation and treatment, return-to-learn recommendations, return-to-play guidance and medical clearance, and communication with the student’s athletic trainer and school throughout the recovery process.
About Contact Medical
Contact Medical was founded by Daniel Rafie, MD, a physician board-certified in Neurology and Brain Injury Medicine who specializes in Sports Neurology and Traumatic Brain Injury. Dr. Rafie completed a two-year fellowship in Sports Neurology and Traumatic Brain Injury at the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program, where he trained under nationally recognized leaders in concussion care.

Christopher C. Giza, MD – Director of the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program, Professor of Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery at UCLA, and an internationally recognized leader in concussion and traumatic brain injury research.
Joshua Goldman, MD, MBA – Associate Director of the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program, sports medicine physician and team physician for UCLA Athletics, and team doctor for the Los Angeles Chargers.
Insurance and Financial Assistance
Student-athletes participating in certain SDUSD sports receive additional secondary accident insurance coverage through the district’s HeadStrong Concussion Program, which can cover any out-of-pocket expenses remaining after the primary insurance claim has been processed.
Student-athletes participating in sports not covered under the HeadStrong Concussion Program may still receive care through Contact Medical. Contact Medical bills the family’s primary health insurance and is in network with several major insurance plans. Standard copays, deductibles, and other patient-responsibility amounts may apply depending on the family’s insurance plan.
For qualifying families who are unable to afford their out-of-pocket costs or whose insurance plan is out of network with Contact Medical, a financial assistance program is available to help provide access to specialist concussion care.
